Airpod Pros As Hearing Aids

Olive Max Is Like The Airpods Pro For The Hearing

Apple Airpods Pro Detailed Hearing Aid Review

Expanding its range to now include the Olive Max, Nevada-based Olive Union is quickly becoming the Apple of hearing-disabled-specific tech. Often in the pursuit to make a sexy product, designers tend to forget a section of their audience that isnt focused on owning the product as a fashion or style statement. Take for instance the Apple Watch. The wearable debuted in 2015 and over the years evolved into an Apple-made smartwatch that could track your heartbeat, sleep, exercise, fitness, heart rhythm, steps, and a variety of body metrics. However, the ability to track ones period wasnt introduced until 2019, likely because it didnt occur to Apple that the smartwatch could serve this purpose. The same goes for the AirPods. With as many microphones as it has, and with Apples most advanced processors sitting on the inside analyzing real-world sounds and computing advanced noise-cancellation algorithms, the AirPods could just as easily serve as a pair of incredibly advanced hearing aids but the reality is that it probably never occurred to Apples design or marketing team when they first envisioned the product. Luckily, in a meeting room somewhere on the other side of the planet in Tokyo, the idea came to Owen Song, founder of Olive Union.

Limitations Of Using Airpods As Hearing Aids

While the AirPod Pros are an amazing piece of technology with some wonderful features, they unfortunately still have limitations. These are important to take into account if you are planning to use your AirPods as hearing aids.

  • They dont amplify sound efficiently enough to replace hearing aids. The AirPod Pros amplify all sounds equally, making them difficult to use in noisy environments. Traditional hearing aids can distinguish between background noise and speech, showing that AirPods are not a perfect alternative for people with moderate to severe hearing loss.
  • Wearing AirPods as hearing aids might be viewed as antisocial as they are thought of as headphones first and foremost. Some people might not be aware of this feature, so you might find yourself having to explain why youre wearing them during a conversation.
  • In comparison to standard hearing aids, they are designed for younger and more tech-savvy demographics, meaning they lack the ease of use and simplicity of a traditional hearing aid.
  • Relying solely on the AirPods as hearing aids might lead to you avoiding seeing a professional about your hearing loss. This runs the risk of leaving any underlying conditions undiagnosed.

Finally, Apple has stated that using AirPods as hearing aids is not their intended function and has advised users to see their physician if they have serious difficulty with their hearing. It is always important to keep in mind that this product is not a dedicated hearing device.

Upcoming Airpods Pro 2 Set To Include Heart Rate And Hearing Aid Features

The next generation of AirPods Pro will include many upgrades both externally and internally.

The next entry in Apples AirPods Pro lineup may include quite a list of exciting enhancements if theres any truth to the latest report on Apples progress.

Rumors of Apples second-generation AirPods Pro have been making the rounds for over a year. Many expected Apple would release this successor to the 2019 AirPods Pro last fall, but that never happened.

Its entirely possible the company may have originally planned to do so, but of course, the global health pandemic slowed everything down, and if Apple has to choose between the iPhone and AirPods, its not hard to guess which one is going to land on the back burner.

The AirPods 3 arrived last fall, so all eyes are now on the AirPods Pro 2 as the next in line. The original AirPods Pro are still selling reasonably well, but by this fall, theyll have been on the market for nearly three years.

Early rumors of the new AirPods Pro suggested that Apple was trying for a buds-like design, similar to the premium true wireless earphones offered by Google and Samsung. Our sources confirmed this in February, but nobody seems certain yet whether Apple will be able to pull it off.

Can Airpods Protect Hearing For Quick Impulses Like Gunfire

Airpods make a great alternative to hearing protection for those who need it but dont want the stigma attached.

Im sure there were many who didnt care that Airpods were created for hearing protection, because all they wanted was a pair of buds that would go in their ears and allow them to enjoy music or talk on the phone without having to take out their hearing aids and Bluetooth device.

Its a valid question. Its not like there are any standard bulletproof hearing aids out there, but luckily technology has come a long way. Airpods were created for people who hear fast, high pitched sound pulses and air pressure that quickly pass through the ear canal.

When the gun is fired, these quick impulses cause vibrations that move air into the canal which creates an echo effect.

AirPods cannot protect hearing for quick impulses like gunshot.

Change Your Airpod Settings To Enable Live Listen & Amplify Sounds Near Your Iphone Or Ipad

New Apple Airpod Pro High Copy

Live Listen is a clever feature that essentially turns your iPhone into a microphone and then amplifies the sounds it picks up through your Airpods. As long as your Airpods are in range of your phone, they essentially act like pseudo-hearing aids. Not only does this sound cool in theory, it actually works really well! Let’s cover how to set up and use the Live Listen feature.

People Hope To Use Airpods Because They Are Affordable

A pair of AirPod Pros could set you back $250 if you purchase direct, or $41.50 per month for 6 months. Its not difficult to spend five times that amount on hearing aids if you visit a few big name specialty stores. How could they possibly cost that much, given their mass-produced technology?

Its simple when you drill down into the hearing aid industry. Their ingenious devices should be plug-and-play, order-on-the-internet like Blue Angels. However, this is not the case with stores in shopping malls you find. They are not just selling hearing aids, they are selling lifestyle.

People are hoping to use AirPod headphones instead, because they dont want to pay three-times over for hearing tests, high-paid technicians, and the cost of those shops. We could not agree with them more. However, unfortunately, Apple itself says AirPods are not nearly as good as proper hearing aids.

Not Quite A Threat To Hearing Aids

For now, this new system isn’t quite a threat to hearing aids, however, it may well help to meet the needs of consumers who have situational problems. For instance, for consumers who have mild or moderate hearing loss that really shows its effects in noisy environments. Using this feature with a set of Airpods Pro may well help them to hear better in those environments just like the IQ Buds from NuHeara do now.

Combined with an app like the Chatable App that we discussed a couple of articles ago, I can imagine it would definitely meet the needs of occasional, situational users very well. In finishing, good job Apple, not a threat to hearing aids right now, but a very interesting beginning to a future for people with hearing loss that just looks more interesting every day.

How To Turn On Headphone Accommodations

The first step to being able to use your Apple AirPods Pro as hearing aids is that you’ll need a device running iOS 14 or iPadOS 14. On your device, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Headphone Accommodations.

You can then set your own custom audio settings turn on Phone to apply these to phone calls, and turn on Media to apply these to music, films, podcasts, audiobooks, Siri, Voicemail, and Live Listen.

You can then use Custom Audio Setup to listen to audio samples and choose which one sounds better to you, applying these settings to your headphones alternatively you can adjust the EQ balance slider manually to adjust the sound.

You can also use your audiogram data from the Health app to customize your audio settings, changing the left/right balance of your audio if you have one ear thats better than the other.

As we mentioned, these features work with all Apple headphones, but to use your earbuds as makeshift hearing aids, youll need the AirPods Pro true wireless earbuds specifically.

Whats Coming To The Airpods Pro 2

How To Use Airpods Pro As Hearing Aid

The design is expected to be closer in style to the AirPods 3, although ear tips will be necessary for the Active Noise Cancellation to work properly. The microphone openings and sound cavity tuning holes are said to be similar to the AirPods 3.

Internally, the AirPods Pro 2 will get some much more significant upgrades. A new H1 chip will improve both performance and power consumption, although its not clear whether it will be a whole new chip or the same H1 with a different design.

This will also apparently result in much better Active Noise Cancellation by incorporating improvements to the self-adaptive EQ algorithms. Not surprisingly, sources say the new AirPods Pro will follow the acoustic characteristics of the AirPods 3 while continuing to support features like Spatial Audio.

The report also notes that Apple finally plans to add a heart rate detection sensor to the AirPods Pro. This will take readings from the wearers inner ear to monitor heart rate. It may also support temperature detection, but that hasnt been confirmed.

Weve been hearing reports of heart rate monitoring in AirPods since at least 2018, but this kind of thing takes a while to perfect. Apple has likely been aiming to add heart rate and other health sensors to AirPods for years, so maybe its finally cracked that nut.

Airpods And Airpods Pro Have Live Listen

There is a setting on your AirPods called Live Listen. It allows you to listen to the sounds around you and have them amplified as if they were coming through your speakers. Unfortunately, the AirPods do not have a microphone in them like regular hearing aids.

Instead, you need to connect your AirPods to your iPhone. Your phone picks up sounds the same way it would if you were talking on speakerphone. It then transmits the sounds it picks up into your earphones.

Use Your Apple Airpods Pro As Hearing Aids And You’ve Got Yourself A Discrete Way Of Amplifying The Sound Of The Person You’re Chatting With

Did you know that you can use your Apple AirPods Pro as hearing aids? If the answer is no, you’re in good company because we didn’t either! But it’s true, while they’re no replacement for proper hearing aids, you can certainly use your Apple AirPods in a pinch if you’re needing to amplify the world around you.

The Apple AirPods Pro are among the best wireless earbuds on the planet and while they won’t work for severe hearing loss, a Headphone Accommodations feature released with iOS 14 means the AirPods Pro do a solid job when it comes to noise reduction and amplifying the sound of the person you’re having a conversation with.

So, how exactly does it work? Well, basically, the secret to being able to use your Apple AirPods Pro as hearing aids lies in the earbuds Transparency Mode, which tunes the sound of your environment to your hearing needs, allowing environmental sound to pass through the earbuds. You can then use Headphone Accommodations to tweak how loud this is, which means you can amplify your surroundings in much the same way that you’d be able to do if you were wearing a proper hearing aid.

With around 20% of people who would benefit from a hearing aid not wearing one, investing in the best iPhone and then pairing your AirPods Pro with that is a great way for those of us with mild hearing loss to be able to amplify sound in a way that’s discrete. Read on to find out exactly how to use your Apple AirPods Pro as hearing aids.
