What You Should Know About Over

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration finally took the next big step toward expanding treatment options for hearing loss in October 2021. It proposed rules establishing a new category of over-the-counter hearing aids that you can purchase without a prescription.

This FDA push toward making OTC hearing aids more accessible is a solution to the widespread issue of access in the U.S.

In its press release, the FDA notes that approximately 37.5 million American adults report trouble hearing. Yet only about 20% of people who could benefit from hearing aids are currently using the medical devices.

Its hard to say exactly why the percentage of hearing aid use remains so low. But some experts attribute it to lack of access to an audiologist or hearing aid dispenser. Because the FDA currently regulates hearing aids as prescription medical devices, they have to be prescribed by a hearing professional.

Others believe the costs of the devices prevent many Americans from affording them.

OTC hearing aid availability could help address both of those concerns. Consumers will be able to purchase the hearing aids at retail and online outlets. However, while the Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act could help millions of people achieve better hearing, some experts still have concerns.

Heres what youll learn:

Technically, these devices are personal sound amplification products not hearing aids and can only amplify sound by about 20dB without picking up on specific frequencies.

Who Should Consider Otc Hearing Aids

OTC hearing aids are intended to help adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, according to the FDARA. However, consumers should keep in mind that hearing loss can sometimes be a symptom of underlying health issues, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease, says Michele Michaels, a hearing health care program manager at the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing in Phoenix.

For this reason, she recommends consulting with a hearing health professional or a primary care physician before purchasing an OTC hearing aid. We always advise people who notice hearing loss to see a licensed hearing healthcare professional who can look in the ear for earwax or other causes of hearing issues and possibly do a hearing screening, says Michaels.

If youre wondering whether your hearing loss might benefit from an OTC hearing aid, here are several signs you may have mild to moderate hearing loss:

The types of OTC hearing aids outlined in the FDARA arent intended for persons with severe hearing loss who have great difficulty communicating, says Michaels.

Otc Hearing Aids: Key Takeaways

  • More affordable hearing aid options are now a reality, thanks to a new category of over-the-counter hearing aids established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in August 2022.
  • OTC hearing aids are designed to treat mild to moderate hearing loss in adults 18 years and older.

Nearly 25% of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 have hearing loss severe enough to affect their daily life, and that number jumps to 50% for people over the age of 75.1 Even though hearing loss can be a significant burden, many people wait an average of 10 years before buying hearing aids.2 Reasons for waiting vary, but common beliefs include the perception that hearing aids are too expensive or that they arent helpful in treating hearing loss.

The FDAs final rule on OTC hearing aids is intended to tackle both of these barriers.3 By increasing innovation and competition among OTC hearing aid companies, the FDA rule is designed to create more options for shoppers who want affordable hearing aids. Read on for more information about what OTC hearing aids are, the best-rated OTC hearing aids, and ways to save money when buying them.

Sound Amplification Devices Vs Hearing Aids

BEST Places to Buy Over-The-Counter (OTC) Hearing Aids!

Dr. Lindsay Creed, Au.D., CCC-A, is the associate director of audiology practices and a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She says, “Personal sound amplification products are unregulated devices that are intended to provide situational hearing enhancement. They are not medical devices and are not intended to be used by individuals with hearing loss.” These devices are less sophisticated than many of the self-fitting over-the-counter hearing aids that we now see entering the marketplace.

Hearing aids, on the other hand, are medical devices regulated by the FDA and designed to amplify sound for the wearer. These devices are recommended for those with age-related or self-perceived hearing loss.

The best style of hearing aid for a particular person varies based on their degree of hearing loss, dexterity and lifestyle, among other factors, explains Dr. Sarow.

Most hearing aid users today wear a BTE-style hearing aid, she says. The newest technology is first implemented in this style of hearing aid, and its broad fitting range flexibility works for most hearing losses, so many opt for this hearing aid style.

ITE hearing aids may be a preferred option for some hearing aid wearers due to their ease of use. For example, an individual with poor dexterity may find it easier to insert an ITE hearing aid due to its one easier-to-grasp piece rather than the BTE style that involves a piece behind the ear and a piece in the ear canal, says Dr. Sarow. For anyone unsure about which type is most appropriate for them, its best to consult an audiologist.

How We Tested Over

Our testing process consisted of both objective and subjective testing and took many months to complete. For the objective testing, we focused on measuring each devices maximum gain and its frequency response .

We were surprised to learn from our sources that, despite the fact that PSAPs and hearables have a legally limited amount of gain based on ANSI standards, there isnt an FDA oversight board that tests the efficacy or safety of any hearing-augmentation device, including hearing aids. The entire industry essentially polices itself by relying on doctors and wearers to flag deviations or return the things they buy. Because we know the potential risks of listening at too-loud volume levels, we wanted to find out whether any of the devices that we called in would fall outside the ANSI gain specifications.

Senior staff writer Brent Butterworth and I met with Linda Kozma-Spytek, senior research audiologist at the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University, to discuss what we might be able to reasonably measure. Brent used his GRAS Model 43AG ear/cheek simulator with a KB5000 simulated pinna, in conjunction with an Audiomatica Clio 12 audio analyzer and TrueRTA software, to analyze the frequency response and the gain of our test samples. We then compared these numbers to the ANSI PSAP or hearing-aid standards to check that they fell within guidelines.
