Are Otc Sleep Aids Safe

Diphenhydramine and doxylamine succinate are antihistamines that are sold over the counter. While theyre sometimes used as sleep aids, thats not their primary use. There is not strong evidence that they work well as sleep aids, and they may cause side effects.

Older adults, especially those with kidney or liver issues, should not use diphenhydramine.

Its best not to take OTC sleep aids regularly, since doing so can lead to dependence. If you do use them, do so only occasionally and for no more than 2 weeks at a time. Be sure to talk with a healthcare professional if youre regularly experiencing trouble sleeping.

When To Try Sleeping Pills

Consider these drugs if the sleep problems are affecting your quality of life and nothing else has helped. But your health-care provider should watch you carefully to make sure that the drug is helping and not causing bad side effects.

What Are The Potential Risks Or Complications Of Prescription Sleeping Pills

Sleep Aid for Adults

Some prescription sleep medicines may bring on parasomnia. This disruptive sleep disorder can cause dangerous behaviors while youre still mostly asleep. People who take Z-drugs, in particular, may sleepwalk or eat, take medications, talk or even drive, all while unaware that theyre doing these things. You may appear to be awake, but your brain is not fully alert. Most people dont remember doing these things after they wake up.

Benzodiazepines can be addictive and lead to substance abuse. To lower this risk, healthcare providers only prescribe these sleeping pills for short-term use. Youre more likely to get a prescription for Z-drugs instead.

What Are The Different Types Of Sleep Aids Available Over The Counter

The two main types of sleep aids youll find on the market are sedating antihistamines and melatonin. Sedating antihistamines can be diphenhydramine or doxylamine succinate , Dr. Williams says. If allergies, headaches, or minor pains are disrupting your sleep, diphenhydramine can be helpful. Doxylamine succinate is for people who can’t fall asleep but not because of any other complaints.

Antihistamines work by blocking the action of histamine, a substance associated with allergy symptoms, Dr. Williams says. In addition to clearing up congestion, it also causes drowsiness, hence the reason for it being used as a sleep aid. But there are some unpleasant side effects from using antihistamines on the reg, including headaches, drowsiness, blurred vision, and constipation.

On the other hand, melatonin is considered a more natural option since its a hormone that your body produces naturally. Your bodys melatonin level tends to be at its highest at night and lowest in the morning, Dr. Williams says. Melatonin helps your body know that it’s the time to relax and sleep. It doesnt, therefore, knock you out, like antihistamines. And youre unlikely to become dependent on melatonin, nor are there many side effects.

Get On A Routine Schedule

Every human body has a built-in internal clock known as the circadian rhythm. This clock regulates our sleep patterns and controls the release of certain hormones that affect things like hunger, temperature, and emotions. Many things can disrupt these patterns, including going to bed at different times every day.

One of the easiest ways to reset this internal clock is to get on a routine schedule of going to bed and waking at approximately the same time each day.

Plus, it can minimize eye dryness, puffiness, migraines, headaches, and tension from too much screen time during the day.

What Are The Side Effects Of Sleeping Pills

Like most medications, sleeping pills have side effects. You won’t know, though, whether you will have side effects with a particular sleeping pill until you try it.

Your doctor may be able to tell you about some side effects if you have asthma or other health conditions. Sleeping pills can interfere with normal breathing and can be dangerous in people who have certain chronic lung problems such as asthma , emphysema, or forms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease .

Common side effects of prescription sleeping pills such as Ambien, Halcion, Lunesta, Rozerem, and Sonata include:

  • Burning or tingling in the hands, arms, feet, or legs
  • Changes in appetite
  • Unusual dreams

It’s important to be aware of possible sleeping pill side effects so you can stop the drug and call your doctor immediately to avoid a more serious health problem.

A Pair Of Blue Light Glasses

Joel Gould, DDS, a dentist and sleep apnea expert based in California explains that blue and green light between 400-550 nanometers from electronics like a TV or phone screen mess with your production of melatonin and therefore disrupt your natural sleep cycle.

Blue light glasses can help, says Gould and Keller, as well as multiple studies, show that people who wear blue light blocking glasses while using electronics before bed had better sleep patterns than those without. They’re not a standalone treatment for insomnia, but they can be part of a healthier bedtime routine when you can’t shut the screens off early.

Keller recommends Diff’s blue-light blocking glasses specifically as they’re stylish and you can order them with or without a prescription.

Sunrise alarm clocks are a great tool to help regulate your circadian clock by mimicking the natural exposure to sunrise and sunset, our experts explain. While this is a great tool for adults, a sunrise alarm clock is also an easy, medicine-free approach to help restless, sleepless kids who struggle to fall or stay asleep, says Dr. Cacho.

She recommends a lamp with 10,000 lux and a white noise machine to improve the quality of sleep in babies. We love all Hatch’s sunrise lamps, but the Hatch Rest+, in particular, has both white noise and a light for a gentle wake .

Sleeping Pills Are Usually Not The Best Solution

Sleep Aid for Adults

Almost one-third of older people in the U.S. take sleeping pills. These drugs are called sedative- hypnotics or tranquilizers. They affect the brain and spinal cord.

What Are All Natural Aids

Natural sleep aids are made from botanical ingredients and nutrients, so they usually have fewer side effects than over-the-counter or prescription medications. However, because the FDA doesnt regulate them the same way they do for drugs, it is important to research ingredients and follow safety guidelines.

Unlike OTC or prescription medications that are mostly designed for other purposes but cause drowsiness as a side effect, natural sleep aids address the root cause using ingredients found in nature. These holistic remedies work to correct the underlying imbalances causing sleepless nights, targeting the circadian rhythm, hormones, neurotransmitters, or nutritional deficiencies.

Both OTC and natural remedies are intended for short-term use only. Prescription drugs are used for chronic insomnia and tend to have more side effects and an increased risk of dependency. Most pills you can buy without a prescription will have a warning about extended use, recommending users see a doctor if they havent noticed an improvement in 14 days.

Holistic remedies are growing in popularity as people are looking for chemical-free alternatives with a lower risk for dependence and overdose. While natural aids can still cause some minimal side effects, they tend to be mild and short-lived. However, it is important to remember that just because a product is labeled as natural doesnt mean you can take as much of it as you want without any risk of harm.

Who Should Buy A Sleep Aid

Many people dont get enough sleep, but for some of them, its not just a matter of choice: sleep problems like insomnia, restless tossing and turning, or early awakening trouble a lot of people. Sleep aids can help with these problems.

A sleep aid uses supplemental or herbal compounds to help induce the onset of sleep and ensure that you stay asleep once you fall asleep. Sleep aids are most popular among people who have chronic sleep disturbances, particularly insomnia.

The incidence of these problems increases as you get older, so sleep aids are particularly popular among older adults. Insomnia is a common feature of menopause, which is another reason why sleep aids are popular among older adults.

Sleep aids are the topic of a lot of research into inexpensive treatments for insomnia, and also as a way to increase overall sleep quality.

Sleep aids have also proven very useful for short-term disturbances to sleep, like jet lag or changes in shift work. Since these abrupt changes in your schedule throw your bodys circadian rhythm off of its natural cycle, sleep aids that incorporate compounds modulating your circadian rhythm, like melatonin, are great for adjusting your bodys internal clock back to a new equilibrium.

Thanks to their short-term uses, sleep aids are popular among travellers and shift workers, even if they dont have sleep problems as a part of their usual routines when they arent traveling or taking on atypical work hours.
