Florida leads the U.S. in the number of new HIV cases and has the nations third highest infection rate, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
The state reported almost 4,400 new HIV infections in 2019, the most recent data available for the federal agencys HIV surveillance report. Floridas infection rate averages out to 23.7 cases per 100,000 people, trailing only the District of Columbia and Georgia. Florida is also well above the national average rate of 13.
Hillsborough and Pinellas counties have been listed by the federal government as among 48 areas of concern in the nationbased on infection rates. Hillsborough reported 266 cases in 2019 and another 184 people in Pinellas were diagnosed with the virus.
Despite the increase, Floridas 2019 caseload is still below 4,700 infections it recorded in 2016. Researchers Aim To End Miamis Hiv Epidemic
When approved in 2012, a pill that prevents infection from the AIDs virus was considered a game changer, one that finally could help halt the pandemic that, to date, has killed nearly 33 million people worldwide. Yet, eight years later, many people at high risk of acquiring HIV have never heard of the pre-exposure prophylaxis medication, much less are taking it.
Rosina Cianelli, an associate professor in the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, is determined to change that reality among heterosexual Hispanic womenparticularly those who face the cultural barrier of machismo when it comes to protecting themselves from HIV. Recognizing that Latina women cant always convince partners who embody the macho standard of sexual dominance and promiscuity to use condoms, Cianelli and her co-investigators plan to augment a proven HIV prevention strategy to increase PrEP use among an overlooked population of at-risk heterosexual Hispanic women, Latina farmworkers in rural south Miami-Dade County.
Women account for about 19 percent of new HIV diagnoses, yet only about 7 to 10 percent of PrEP users are women, and only about 11 percent of Hispanic women are familiar with PrEP, Cianelli said. Given that the rate of Hispanic women living with HIV is 2.5 times higher than for non-Hispanic white women, they need to be more aware of PrEP. That is the reality we are confronting.

People often leave their healthy habits at home when they travel, said Dr. Stephen Fallon, executive director of Latinos Salud, a Wilton Manors-based non-profit group that raises awareness about HIV prevention and treatment for gay Latino men. People may overindulge in the cruise ship buffet, have a few too many at the popular nightclub and, yes, put fantasy ahead of clear-eyed choices in the bedroom. But the tourist piece probably isnt driving our epidemic as much as other factors.

Florida also has strong in-migration from other states, as well as from outside the country, where people may not have the same level of education on sex and public health. The warm-weather climate and active social life are very attractive to those coming who may not know their status.

Ending The Hiv Epidemic In Miami
For years, Miami-Dade has led the nation with some of the highest HIV transmission rates. Ashley Cason, Ending the HIV Epidemic community ambassador, spoke about what’s fueling this issue, and resources that can help
The organization works to raise awareness regarding the impacts HIV has had on the South Florida community. Cason says there are about 27,000 people in Miami-Dade living with HIV. The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of new cases of HIV within the next five years.
Over her 10 years working as a community ambassador, Cason says she’s seen how stigmas affect the way people think about the disease. Several people think it doesn’t exist, while others think it can be passed through kissing.
“Sometimes it can be difficult to share the correct knowledge, and the correct education, and to even get people tested, because of what so many people have believed about HIV over the past 30 years,” she says.
Knowing your status is extremely important, not only for your health but the health of your partner. Getting tested together and having an open conversation surrounding the topic can save lives by reducing the spread of HIV.

Although women only accounted for about 20% of all new HIV infections in 2017,substantial risk existed among non-Hispanic black women . Hispanic residents accounted for 59% of all new HIV diagnoses in 2017, yet theirrisk of new infections was lower than the risk for thenon-Hispanic population . Despite an overall decrease in thenumber of new HIV diagnoses, to 1270 in 2016 and to 1195 in 2017, the number of newdiagnoses did not decrease among all risk groups: new diagnoses among non-Hispanic blackwomen increased from a rate of 58.5 per 100 000 residents in 2014 to 68.5 per 100 000residents in 2017.
