Bluetooth Hearing Aids For Tv

Every hearing person knows when there is a hard of hearing person living in the house. Not more than 5 feet from the front door, they can hear the TV blasting from the outside. They now have an impossible task of getting your attention by knocking on the door or ringing the doorbell. The sounds seeking your attention just drown under the noise of the television.

The poor thing, now your guests are stuck looking like they are about the break and enter by the neighbors, as they peer into the windows on your house to see if they can get your attention, or walk around your house to see if there is any potential sign of anybody inside. They look like the intruder your neighbors are watching and waiting to see what happens next. Then they startle you when their face is pressed against the window. Yes, this is the life of being friends with a person with hearing loss.

Besides your friends, there are families who live with us everyday who have to put up with the loud volume from the television. They let us know every single time that the television is just too loud. We battle for a volume level that makes sense for both of us. A volume that works for you but does not damage their own eardrums. Then we turn back up the volume when they leave the room again.

ARTISTE Wireless TV Headphones for TV Watching Listening 2.4GHz ...

My name is Andreas Seelisch and Im an audiologist working with Hearing Solutions.

Id like to talk to you a little bit today about some of the wireless components that are available for hearing aids today.

Hearing aids are able to connect to a variety of different devices through wireless technology, including Bluetooth.

This means we can take cell phone calls directly from our phone and answer them into our hearing aids.

It also means we can take audio samples from just about any audio signal.

Most commonly this might be something like a television.

The reason we want to do this isnt because the hearing aids wont work without a television because it can just make it something better.

Audio when it leaves something like a speaker is bouncing off of a lot of other objects and its losing energy on its way and it may be changing.

We also may be introducing noise another person talking, a fan, an engine anything thats going on in the background and all of this can reduce from the enjoyment or it can make the signal to noise ratio worse.

When we use a wireless device like this were taking the audio directly from the television and putting it directly into the hearing aids.

This means that the signal isnt being converted from electrical energy into acoustical energy in extra time.

It also means theres less noise involved.

Overall what this means to the patient is just a much better listening experience.

But this is something that only needs to be completed one time.

Are Bluetooth Hearing Aids Safe

As hearing aids get more intelligent and connected, you might wonder if all these Bluetooth waves are safe. You can read some excellent research here, but the short answer is yes, hearing aids with Bluetooth are very safe. The power the devices emit is around one-thousandth as powerful as we receive when talking on the phone.

In other words, you would need to wear around 1,000 hearing aids to get the same effect as your cell phone.

Turn On The Subtitles

Another great way to watch TV with hearing aids is to turn on the subtitles. Your hearing aids help you catch every word, but if you sometimes miss a word you can read it in the subtitles.

Almost all TVs offer closed captioning. This makes subtitles an easy option, because its something your TV already offers. Just look for the closed captioning symbol on your remote control. Push the button to enjoy all your programming with captions.

Dont Forget About Closed Captioning

Since 2006, Congress has demanded that all TV programs show audio as text. Its also necessary for cable operators, satellite distributors, and online providers to provide closed captioning. The latter was mandated in a Massachusetts court in 2012 when the National Association of the Deaf sued Netflix.

Under the law, such subtitles must be:

  • Precise: To the extent possible, they must match spoken words and background noises.
  • Timely: Onscreen words shall coincide as far as possible with their corresponding spoken words and sounds.
  • Comprehensive: The captions must run from start to finish.
  • Carefully placed: The placement of the subtitles should not block or run off the edge of the screen or obscure crucial visual information.

While closed captioning is not always a complete word-by-word transcript of what is said, it can still be a useful tool to make TV understandable even in conjunction with the strategies listed above.

Additional tools to help you hear movie dialogue

If you struggle to understand the dialogue when watching a movie from your couch, hearing loss may not be the problem. Instead, how that films audio was created could be whats frustrating you.

In theaters, different sounds are played through different speakers, with the dialogue projected from a center channel for clarity. Most television sound systems arent built that way.

So, if youre tired of riding the remote turning up the volume for dialogue and then turning it down for action scenes or music swells you have two other options in addition to investing in a soundbar, getting a good pair of headphones and setting up subtitles:

Turn down the bass. Bass is the enemy of understandable speech, according to tech website CNET. A hearty low end might enhance a rumbling earthquake or an exploding building, but you wont be able to hear any character plan her escape from the impending disaster.

Compress the volume range. Some TVs feature a night mode, which reduces the difference between the loudest and softest parts of a movie soundtrack. The purpose is to keep your TV quieter when others are asleep in your home, but you can keep it on this setting all the time. Some TVs refer to it as dynamic compression.

Is It Direct Or Do I Need Another Device

It confuses me when people say that the hearing aid can bluetooth directly to the TV but in all actuality its not technically accurate. Direct pairing between a hearing aid and a bluetooth device means there are no other receivers or devices in between the connection. This is very unlikely because the only device that controls the hearing aids are smartphones and its apps.

iPhone works with a number of hearing aid manufacturers to allow for direct pairing of hearing aids to the iPhone with no other device in between. For android users, you need Android 10 and above to work and a Starkey, Widex, ReSound and Whisper AI hearing aid brands.

However, times are changing and new technologies will be making direct to TV possible. At the moment we can use Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids . This will give you the direct connection everyone is talking about. Well that is until you next purchase your latest and greatest new hearing aids in the upcoming years.
