No Lossless Audio And No Mention Of Bluetooth Le Audio Or Auracast

Apple made no mention of support for lossless audio in their launch event or press release. Implementing lossless audio would allow the new earbuds to reproduce streamed music bit-for-bit the same as the original audio file, resulting in extremely high-quality sound. As Apple Music currently offers lossless audio, its possible AirPods Pro 2 may offer it via its Apple Lossless Audio Codec codec at a future date.

And while Airpods Pro 2 use Bluetooth 5.3 wireless technology, there was no mention of Auracast, a Bluetooth Low-Energy Audio technology released in June that is expected to become the next generation assistive listening technology. The Auracast platform will enable an audio transmitter, such as a smartphone, laptop, television, or public address system, to broadcast audio to an unlimited number of nearby Bluetooth audio receiversincluding hearing aids, earbuds, and similar Auracast-enabled devices.

Although Bluetooth is becoming prevalent in hearing aids and Auracast could ultimately replace the venerable telecoil, we anticipate the telecoil will coexist with Auracast for many years to come. As with lossless audio, Apple could be planning to announce Auracast compatibility at a future date.

What Happens After Uploading Your Hearing Test

If your test results show the same hearing loss in each ear, the headphone accommodations will take the average of the two ears and apply that profile to the appropriate audio channels. However, if you have an uneven hearing loss, the left and right audio channels will be positioned towards your better ear. So, once your hearing test is uploaded into your iPhone’s health area, it will display neatly in the Headphone Accommodations, instantly boosting sound reproduction.

How do your test results affect the sound of the earbuds? When you stream sounds from your phone to your AirPods Prosuch as phone calls, music, videos, the radio, or podcastsyour phone will automatically adjust the sound at the specific pitches to compensate for your hearing loss.

New Feature Turns Your Airpods Pro Into A Makeshift Hearing Aid For Conversations

This is a big week for AirPods Pro features. Along with expanded Find My support for tracking down lost earbuds, the latest firmware has also unlocks Conversation Boost that amplifies the sound of the person talking in front of you.

Conversation Boost uses your AirPods Pro microphones and computational audio to zero in on the sound of the person youre speaking with. It works in tandem with Transparency Mode but instead of amplifying all sounds like Live Listen, Conversation Boost pinpoints human voices directed at you. Youre also able to adjust the level of ambient sound to help you focus.

Heres how it works, First make sure your AirPods Pro are on the latest firmware, version 4A400. You can check by connecting your AirPods to your phone, then going to Settings, About, tapping on the name of your AirPods, and looking at the firmware number. If its not 4A400, you can put your AirPods in the case, plug it in or place it on a wireless charging pad, and wait for them to update. Theres no way to force an install, so it might take a while.

Once theyre updated, youll find Conversation Boost in the Accessibility section of Settings. Scroll down to AirPods, then Audio Accessibility Settings, and Headphone Accommodations. On the next screen, tap Custom Audio Setup, then Continue to adjust the Transparency Mode settings to adjust the volume, balance, and tone. Finally, switch the Conversation Boost toggle to green.

When Apple launched the AirPods in 2016, the truly wireless earbuds attracted a lot of attention . While the Cupertino tech giant has not really upgraded the earbuds, it has been subtly adding features here and there to keep adding value to them and make them stand out from the crowd. Last year, Apple introduced wireless charging with a new case for the earbuds, and this year the change is more software oriented. With the introduction of iOS 12, the company has added a very neat touch to the AirPods which allows you to turn these truly wireless earbuds into makeshift hearing aids, using a feature called Live Listen.

The feature picks up audio using the microphones present on the AirPods for calling purposes and then enhances and delivers it through the speaker on earbuds, thus allowing you to hear the sounds around you more clearly and at a higher volume. This feature is not only handy for people with mild hearing problems but can also be used when one wants to converse in a noisy environment without having to shout.

If you have AirPods or wireless headphones and an Android phone, then you can download an app from Google Play that serves the same purpose as Live Listen. For example, there is an app called Headset Remote, which allows you to transmit what your Android phone picks up to your AirPods or other wireless headphones.

Apple Is Still Focused On Conversation Boost

Turn Your AirPods Pro 2nd Gen into Hearing Aids in Under 3 Minutes!!!

Conversation Boost is designed to use computational audio and beamforming microphones to help the wearer focus on the voice of the person in front of them and stay more connected in conversations in noisy environments. A recent study from the National Acoustic Laboratories in Australia showed that Conversation Boost with Ambient Noise Reduction is comparable to hearing aids with conventional directional microphones that provide 3-6 dB SNR improvement.

These features, as well as Adaptive Transparency, work best when there is a more snug fit on the earbuds. Thats why four sizes of eartips, including a new extra-small size, are offered to provide a better acoustic seal and control of sound inside the ear canal, preventing frequencies from leaking out of the ear.

Surprise Discovery Shows Airpods Can Work As Well As Expensive Hearing Aids

Higher end AirPods have the potential to act as hearing aids for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, according to new research that put the Apple-made earbuds up against traditional hearing aids in a series of tests.

The findings could transform the lives of millions of people who don’t currently make use of hearing aids they need, because of the high cost or because of the social stigma that comes along with them two issues that don’t apply so much to consumer earbuds.

“These wireless earbuds are of course not perfect, but they would be a good starting point for many patients who don’t have access to professional hearing aids,” says otolaryngologist Yen-Fu Cheng, from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan.

“They will see an increase in quality of life even with these earbuds.”

For the purposes of the study, 21 participants with mild to moderate hearing loss were tested with premium hearing aids , basic hearing aids , AirPods Pro earbuds and AirPods 2 . The AirPods were linked to Apple iPhones, which had an environmental noise amplifier app called Live Listen installed.

Short sentences were read out to the volunteers, who were then asked to repeat them back.

In noisy environments, if the noise wasn’t coming from in front of the hearer, the AirPods Pro was shown to be comparable in performance to the premium hearing aids. In quiet environments, the AirPods Pro fared slightly worse than premium hearing aids, and about as well as the basic hearing aids.
