Action Needed To Cut Hiv Diagnoses

Well over 2,500 people in Southwark have HIV and the borough has the second highest diagnosis rate in the country

Southwark Council has been asked to take action to address the high rates of HIV in the borough as it has the second highest number of diagnoses in the country.

The only borough with a worse HIV record is neighbouring Lambeth, which has also been asked to pass a motion by Halve It a group of 21 health bodies fighting to get more people tested earlier to stop the spread of the fatal virus.

Cllr David Noakes

The council adopted the motion proposed by Cllr David Noakes at last weeks council meeting after he revealed that well over 2,500 people were recorded as living with an HIV diagnosis in Southwark in 2013 and the diagnosis rate is twelve people in 1,000, compared with a nationwide rate of two in every 1,000.

Cllr Noakes said Southwarks high levels of HIV are largely down to the fact that the borough is home to a large number of two of the most high-risk communities men who have sex with men and the African community.

Reducing late and undiagnosed HIV figures in high risk communities is crucial if we to reduce new infections and improve the outcomes for everyone with HIV, said Cllr Noakes.

Proposed Actions To Improve The National Outlook

Were often asked how metropolitan areas can take actions to improve STD rates. For this, were inclined to turn to the STI National Strategic Plan released by the HHS. It provides recommended approaches and enhancements aimed at turning our trends in a positive direction. Among its proposals are:

  • Partnering with pharmacies and clinics to increase easy local access to STD testing and treatment.
  • Establishing express clinics, where people could access walk-in testing and treatment without full exams.
  • Harnessing the potential of telehealth/telemedicine as a convenient method of testing and consultation for people across the country, including in rural areas.

The CDC stresses, If you are sexually active, getting tested for STDs is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health. Make sure you have an open and honest conversation about your sexual history and STD testing with your doctor

Our STD testing and treatment infrastructure had been strained prior to the pandemic, contributing to increased STD rates each year. Its up to all of us to decide whether reports next year and the year after reveal the 7th and 8th consecutive years of record-high infections or we instead make this tide turn, addressing budget shortfalls and improving public education and access to testing and treatment in our communities.

Religion: Conflict Over Condoms And Aids Education For Young People

Aids charity urges political parties to tackle HIV ahead ...

From the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, there has been a continuous conflict over the role of education about safer sex and condoms in preventing the transmission of HIV. This debate has been particularly sharp when the targets of the educational and condom distribution programs have been young people of high school age, although there has been strong resistance in the national government to condom education for persons of all ages .

The proponents of safer sex education and condom provision to youths point out that they do not necessarily approve of early sexual experimentation on the part of young people, but that large numbers of young persons are sexually active under conditions of relative ignorance about the consequences of their conduct. The decision not to provide safer sex education or condoms to young people places them in danger of the transmission of HIV and other STDs that increase the likelihood of HIV transmission. The arguments of the proponents are short term, pragmatic, and health oriented: young people are sexually active it is unlikely that they will abstain regardless of how often they are exhorted, and they are in danger of contracting a fatal disease. The logical consequence of this position is the provision of age-appropriate sex education that includes information about same-gender sex, modes of HIV transmission and methods of prevention, as well as the provision of condoms without either mandatory counseling or parental consent.

How Common Is Hiv In The Uk

The most recent estimate suggests there were 105,200 people living with HIV in the UK in 2019. Of these, around 6,600 are undiagnosed so do not know they are HIV positive.

London continues to have the highest rates of HIV in the country: 36% of new diagnoses in 2019 were in London residents and 38% of people seen for HIV care were living in London.

Anyone can get HIV but people from some groups or parts of the world are more likely to be affected. In particular, men who have sex with men and black African people are disproportionately affected.

Of the 4,139 people diagnosed with HIV in the UK in 2019, 41% were gay or bisexual men.

Of the 1,559 heterosexual people diagnosed with HIV in 2019, 37% were black African men and women.

In 2017, the overall mortality rate for people aged 15-59 who were diagnosed early was, for the first time, equal to that of the general population for the same age group.

Lambeth Has Highest Hiv Rate In London

Lambeth has the highest prevalence of HIV in London, according to a report released by the Health Protection Agency .

The borough has 2,712 people aged 15 to 59 who are receiving treatment for HIV, with an average of 13.28 cases per 1,000 people.

But though London has the highest rate of HIV in the country, the quality of HIV care received in the capital is high, according to the HPA.

Of newly diagnosed cases, 80 per cent were seen at an HIV clinic within one month of diagnosis, 90 per cent had an undetectable viral load one year after starting therapy, and 93 per cent of those receiving care for more than a year had a restored immune system.

Dr Brian McCloskey, director of the Health Protection Agency in London, said: HIV continues to be a major public health problem in London.

Of particular concern in London is that, in line with national trends, an estimated one in four people living with HIV are unaware of their HIV status and a third of HIV cases are diagnosed late.

This means that patients are missing out on the benefits of early diagnosis including access to life-prolonging treatment.

Our advice to Londoners is to practice safe sex and always use a condom with new and casual sexual partners as this is the best way to prevent sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

We also advise people who are at higher risk of HIV in London such as men who have sex with men and black Africans to get tested for HIV annually.

How New Yorkers Die Depends On Which Borough Is Home

Staten Islanders are more likely to die of cancer and heart disease, Bronx residents of AIDS and murder, and Manhattanites of suicide, state health statistics show.

The survey of state death rates show that Richmond County residents were more likely to perish from heart disease than any other ailment, at a rate of 276 deaths per 100,000 people in 2014.

Thats 43 percent higher than the city average of 193 per 100,000 and 20 percent higher than the state average , the records say.

Residents of the forgotten borough also passed away from cancer, respiratory diseases, and accidents at rates above the city average.

Staten Islanders health problems are likely due to historically high smoking rates, experts say.

About 58,000 residents, or 16.6 percent of the boroughs residents, are smokers, according to a 2014 city health survey.

Doctors are now seeing the repercussions of those bad habits.

The Bronx had the highest death rate from AIDS , murder more than triple and double the state average, respectively and liver disease .

Manhattan had the most suicides , higher than the statewide average and 37 percent higher than Queens and Staten Island .

Deaths from diabetes and pneumonia were most common in Brooklyn.

Queens led the city in strokes with 24.1 deaths per 100,000 people.

The citys overall death rate of 613 per 100,000 was lower than the state average of 753, and has declined from 617 in 2013.

Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights lead the city in new HIV infections, according to data released by the Health Department on Thursday exclusively to amNewYork.

Hospital and clinic closures in Brooklyn may have worsened the response to the epidemic, an expert said, while the city announced last week that it would expand testing hours at public clinics.

Both neighborhoods combined had 162 diagnoses in 2014, the highest in the city in the latest year for which information was available.

A number of clinics and hospitals have closed in Brooklyn, so the persons who were previously in care are no longer in care, and theyre engaging in sex, drugs, said Suzanne Robert Davis, a program manager at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Health Center. We have persons who are not accessing health care services at all, and they dont know if they are HIV positive.

She also said that the neighborhood has a large population of immigrants that dont have access to health care, and that the disproportionate number of residents that have been incarcerated is another contributing factor.

Chelsea and Hells Kitchen had the second greatest number of new infections in 2014, with 140 in the two Manhattan neighborhoods, followed by 130 in Central Harlem and Morningside Heights.

Jonathon Larsons prolific musical masterpiece Rent premiered in 1993, popularizing the vocalization of the unique challenges and experiences of those struggling with HIV and AIDs in New York City during the 80s and early 90s. This devastating epidemic in American culture resulted in the spread of information on safer sex, and the focus of the scientific and medical community on the treatment of HIV and AIDs. Unfortunately, this terrible disease has not been completely eradicated, though much progress has been made. Anyone can be affected by the presence of HIV, and many have felt the weight of loss due to its existence. Doing all we can to remain educated, safe, and compassionate will continue to propel us toward an HIV and AIDs-free world.

Revealed: The London Boroughs With The Highest Sti Rates

Petrelis Files

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea has been named as one of Londons poorest performing areas for sexual health. According to Public Health England , the borough alongside the larger districts of Lambeth and Southwark experienced the greatest prevalence of new STIs in 2016.

The report also revealed that diagnoses of both Syphilis and Chlamydia Britains most common STI had risen in the capital over the last 12 months. Overall, the number of infections had actually fallen by five per cent, including a sizeable drop in new cases of Gonorrhoea, something which prompted PHEs London Director, Dr Yvonne Doyle, to claim that the city had turned the tide.

Despite these advances, however, London still has the highest rate of sexually transmitted infections anywhere in the UK, with over 240,000 diagnosed STIs in the last two years alone something Dr Doyle was keen to acknowledge. Speaking to the London Evening Standard, she admitted that poor sexual health remains a public health problem in London, and STIs are still too high compared to other parts of the country.

In 1990, when New York City was gripped by the AIDS crisis, Joyce Rivera started an underground Syringe Access Program on the streets of the Bronx. She understood early on that access to sterile syringes would save countless lives. What was then a radical position has now become commonplace in the United States. Nearly three decades later, the numbers reveal the efficacy of her work.

Before SAPs and other harm reduction initiatives had been established, the HIV rate was as high as 529 per 100,000 people in the worst areas in the Bronx. Today, the overall rate across the borough is down to roughly 30 per 100,000. Joyces grassroots movement has grown into what is now St. Anns Corner of Harm Reduction , a state-of-the-art harm reduction center providing a range of health and wellness services to the most marginalized members of the South Bronx. Working with the HIV population continues to be a core part of our work at SACHR, and today we examine the lessons we have learned and what the future of HIV treatment looks like in our community.
