Supportive Laws Family And Peers Lower The Risk Of Poor Health Outcomes For Lgbtq People Of Color

Suicide attempts by LGBT youth dropped by 7 percent in states that legalized same-sex marriage.22;

The corollary is that anti-LGBTQ state laws inflict tangible harm on sexual minority populations. States with denial of service laws that give license to discriminate against LGBT residents were linked with a 46% increase in LGBT mental distress.23;

Black LGBTQ youth who reported high levels of support from at least one person, or who had access to an LGBTQ-affirming space, reported attempting suicide at lower rates than those who lacked such support . Those with high levels of family support had rates of past-year attempted suicide nearly one third as high as those who lacked such support .24;

Protective measures that have been found to help reduce anxiety, depression, and suicidality among LGBTQ youth include: Establishing inclusive practices and anti-discrimination policies; peer, community, and family support, including dedicated school groups; access to affirmative mental health and social services; societal confrontation of attitudes and norms that exacerbate minority stress; and practitioner training and interventions designed to disrupt negative coping responses and build resilience.

Experiencing Discrimination Is Associated With Greater Odds Of Harm To Psychological And Economic Well

Hundreds of studies conclude that experiencing anti-LGBTQ discrimination increases the risks of; poor mental and physical health, including depression, anxiety, suicidality, PTSD, substance use,; and psychological distress.;

LGBT people of color have work-place experiences that are more negative than those of white; LGBT employees, reporting that their success and work-life balance are fostered less extensively,; they have less transparent evaluations, and they are respected less by supervisors.;

Among LGBTQ people surveyed, 51% of Black respondents say discrimination harms their; ability to be hired, compared with 33% of white respondents; 41% say it has an impact on; their ability to retain employment, compared with 31% of white respondents; 77% of Black; respondents report that discrimination impacts their psychological well-being, a rate nearly 50%; higher than the total LGBTQ survey population.;

While racial discrimination on its own is not associated with mental health disorders, the; combination of racial discrimination with gender and/or sexual orientation discrimination is; significantly associated with increased odds of a past-year mental health disorder.

Hiv/aids In Nyc: Can It Be Stopped And Reversed Top Of Page

While data have demonstrated that the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York City has slowed, HIV is still endemic in the city: last year, 4,200 people were newly diagnosed with HIV. In turn, a central question remains: can this epidemic be stopped and reversed? Dr. Frieden explained that the most critical step in controlling an epidemic is stopping its transmission. The key is provided by a fundamental epidemiologic parameter called the basic reproductive number, or Ro, which measures the potential for the spread of an infectious disease. Formally, Ro is defined as the expected number of secondary infectious cases generated by an average infectious case in a susceptible population. Ro not only tells epidemiologists the potential for an epidemic to continue spreading in the absence of interventions, it also allows them to predict the ability of control measures to reduce transmission.

Why has the HIV epidemic been sustained in New York City and the rest of the United States? For starters, there are issues related to early diagnosis. If everyone infected with HIV learned of their diagnosis soon after infection, we could get these individuals into treatment and get them to take steps to protect themselves and their partners, Dr. Frieden said. This alone would cause a sharp decline in the number of new HIV infections in New York.

As has been discussed in numerous past issues of The PRN Notebook, an HIV-infected patients viral loadespecially when the patient is unaware of his HIV serostatusis a significant determinant of infectiousness. Antiretroviral therapy has been documented to reduce viral load, which includes among its many benefits decreased transmission risk. The problem is that individuals who dont know their HIV status are not aware that they are infectious and are not receiving treatment to reduce their viral loads, Dr. Frieden said. We also need to continually reiterate key HIV prevention messages to our HIV-positive patients: that abstinence is 100% effective, and that limiting the number of sex partners, always using condoms, and never using dirty needles prevent HIV transmission.

A fundamental goal of New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene HIV/AIDS programming is to curb the epidemic. However, there are significant challenges ahead, including the well-documented resurgence of risky sexual behavior. As is shown here, syphilis cases in New York City have increased more than four-fold over the past three years. The number of syphilis cases doubled between 2000 and 2001, increased another 46% in 2002, and another 22% in 2003. The increase is almost entirely among men, especially MSM.

Six cities had an HIV diagnosis rate higher than 20. Miami, Florida had the highest rate at 53.9. The rate dropped significantly between the first and second city, with San Francisco in California holding a rate of 37.9. The third city was Detroit, Michigan that had a rate of 35.6 followed by Boston, Massachusetts which featured a rate of 29. Denver, Colorado was ranked as the fifth city with a rate of 26.2. Minneapolis, Minnesota was the sixth city on the list with a rate of 20.6. The remaining cities all experienced rates between 10 and 20. Fort Worth, Texas ended the list with the only rate under 10, coming in at a rate of 9.1.

An excess of 19,000 people in Louisiana are living with HIV. More than half of those people have AIDS, according to GetTested.com. Although African-Americans make up only 32 percent of the state population, they represented 73 percent of the states new cases in 2011, according to the Louisiana Department of Health. The LDH urges Louisianians to get tested. If people with HIV have the virus diagnosed early, they are able to receive treatment and care early enough to delay the onset of AIDS, LDH Office of Publish Health Assistant Secretary J.T. Lane says in a press release.

These 10 Cities Have The Highest Rates Of Hiv In America

In advance of World AIDS Day, Get Tested has released information on the cities with the highest rates of HIV infection.

Miami tops the list, with more than 52,000 people living with HIV, a reported spike of 23% from past reports. While it and several other cities on the list, are known as gay meccas, others are not.

Get Tested also examined which cities have the highest rates of new HIV diagnoses. Baton Rouge topped the list with 44.7 new cases of the virus per 100,000 people, per the CDC.

Most of the cities on both lists are in the South, where the average rate of infection is 18.5 per 100,000. Thats in comparison to the Northeast , Midwest and West Coast .

In all, more than 44,000 people contracted HIV last year, and men who have sex with men accounting for 67%. Rates of new infections are going down across the board, except among young gay/bi men, where they continue to spike.

Some cities have made major inroads in addressing HIV: In San Fransisco, education and increased access to PrEP has seen infection rates go down by a third.

South Carolina’s Channel 10 WISTV.com reports that poverty, rural geography, lack of affordable healthcare and social stigma all contribute to the prevalence of HIV in the South. “Researchers say being a part of the ‘Bible Belt’ adds to the stigma,” they report, meaning that in some cases, a diagnosed person might not seek treatment due to fear of rejection from the religious community. Careteam+, a South Carolina non-profit healthcare provider, tells WISTV.com that they’ve lately been able to refer 500 percent more patients to specialized care thanks to the Affordable Care Act. With antiretroviral therapy, someone who is HIV-positive can keep the illness under control and reduce their risk of infecting others.

Hiv In The United States

Based on the most recent information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , about 1.14 million Americans had HIV at the end of 2016. About 1 in 7 of those with the virus are unaware that they have it.

In 2018, 37,832 people received an HIV diagnosis, according to the CDC. Among those, 42% were black or African American, 27% were Hispanic or Latino, and 25% were white. Also among the new diagnoses, 69% were among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men ; 24% were among heterosexuals, and 7% were among people who inject drugs.

In the United States, there are five categories of laws pertaining to HIV and other STDs. As of 2018, 26 states have HIV-specific laws that criminalize behaviors that can potentially expose another person to HIV.

States with the Highest Rates of HIV

These numbers are based on the CDCs HIV Surveillance Report.

California has the highest number of people living with HIV of 128,153, a rate of 389.7 people with HIV per 100,000 residents. Of those living with HIV in California, the largest group is White with 48,155 people and the second-largest is Hispanic/Latino with 48,029.

New York has the second-highest number of people living with HIV of 126,495, a rate of 760.2 per 100,000. This rate is more than double that of Californias. The largest group living with HIV in New York is Black/African American with 47,164 people living with the virus.

As of December 31, 2003, a total of 88,479 New Yorkers have been diagnosed, reported, and are known to be living with HIV or AIDS. Dr. Frieden explained that 57,316 have already received an AIDS diagnosis and that 31,163 are infected with HIV but have not met the immunologic or clinical case definition for AIDS. Of central concern to us, Dr. Frieden said, is that we probably have another 20,000 New York City residents who are HIV-positive but arent aware of their status.

Based on these data, New York City remains the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States . New York City has the highest AIDS case rate in the United States; while it is home to less than 3% of the U.S. population, the city accounts for 17% of national AIDS deaths. We have more cases than Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Washington, D.C., combined, Dr. Frieden noted. Our case rate is 60 times the national target for 2010, four times the U.S. average, and higher than any other city in the U.S.

Md Biotech Companys Hiv Cure Project Clears First Hurdle

American Gene Technologies, the Rockville, Md., biotech company, has announced that the first patient to receive its genetically engineered treatment therapy aimed at curing people of HIV/AIDS encountered no adverse side effects from the treatment.

In an Aug. 2 statement, AGT said that based on the data obtained from Patient One in its Phase 1 human trial of its HIV treatment called AGT103-T, the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations Data and Safety Monitoring Board voted unanimously to allow AGT to continue its HIV cure program without modification.

The AGT103-T pipeline is a therapy for treating HIV disease, the companys statement says. The therapy is designed to induce durable viral suppression by delivering therapeutic genes to the recipients immune cells, it says. The resulting immune cells are expected to survive attack by HIV and durably suppress the virus at undetectable levels without the need for antiretroviral treatment.

The thumbs up decision by the Data and Safety Monitoring Board allows the company to continue its clinical trial with more participants to further confirm the HIV treatments safety outcome. The next phase in the trials will be to determine the treatments effectiveness in fully protecting the human body from HIV.

Efforts Towards Reducing Hiv/aids Prevalence

Countries with the highest rates of HIV infection have taken several measures towards reducing the rate of infection among the population. Awareness programs are conducted to educate the public about HIV/AIDS. Antiretroviral therapies have been provided at low costs to treat HIV positive patients. Pregnant women who test positive for HIV are monitored strictly to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the infection. Other remedial measures have also been implemented to curb HIV/AIDS in these countries.
