Can You Test Negative For Hiv And Still Have It

Dried Blood Spot Test

Can I have HIV symptoms and test negative (hiv symptoms)

A DBS test is a free, accurate and convenient way to test for HIV in the comfort and privacy of your home.

It involves collecting a few drops of blood from your finger and allowing the blood to dry on a test card. You then send the card away to get tested and wait around a week to get the result back. You can register for a DBS HIV test here.

What Is A False Negative Test Result

A false negative test result occurs when the test shows negative and the person is really HIV positive.

This is very rare and usually occurs during the window period when people are newly infected but the test cant quite pick up the infection.

As with other types of tests, there is always be a small margin of error. With antibody-only tests only 0.3% of tests will be a false negative after 3 months.

With 4th generation tests this is even lower. In practice, a negative result after six weeks means you do not have HIV.

You do not need to test again unless you have new risks in the future.

How Are Testing Technologies Used To Diagnose Hiv Infection

To test for HIV, a sample of a persons blood is taken. With the most common test, a vial of blood taken from a vein is sent to a laboratory to be tested for HIV . There are also rapid tests available, which use a drop of blood from a finger prick to test for HIV immediately after the sample is taken.

If You Have A Negative Test Result Does That Mean That Your Partner Is Hiv

No. Your HIV test result reveals only your HIV status.

HIV is not necessarily transmitted every time you have sex. Therefore, taking an HIV test is not a way to find out if your partner is infected.

It’s important to be open with your partner and ask them to tell you their HIV status. But keep in mind that your partner may not know or may be wrong about their status, and some may not tell you if they have HIV even if they know they’re infected. Consider getting tested together so you can both know your HIV status and take steps to keep yourselves healthy.

Why Should Someone Get Tested For Hiv

HIV Test Online

If someone is infected with HIV, it’s important to know because:

  • Starting medicines right away can keep a person stay healthy for a long time.
  • There are ways to stop the spread of HIV to others, such as using a condom and taking medicines.
  • A pregnant woman who is infected can get treatment to try to prevent passing HIV to her baby.

Another reason to get tested is peace of mind: A negative test result can be a big relief for someone who is worried about being infected.

But unlike similar tests are given at clinics and hospital, the in-home version will produce approximately one false negative result out of every 12 tests performed. If the test is performed incorrectly or too soon, the likelihood of a false result will only be greater. If using an in-home test, dont take any chances.

Why Do I Need An Hiv Test

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. You may also need an HIV test if you are at higher risk for infection. HIV is mainly spread through sexual contact and blood, so you may be at a higher risk for HIV if you:

  • Are a man that has had sex with another man
  • Have had sex with an HIV-infected partner
  • Have had multiple sex partners
  • Have injected drugs, such as heroin, or shared drug needles with someone else

HIV can spread from mother to child during birth and through breast milk, so if you are pregnant your doctor may order an HIV test. There are medicines you can take during pregnancy and delivery to greatly reduce your risk of spreading the disease to your baby.

How Long Do I Need To Wait Before I Test

Thereâs a window period between exposure to HIV and a positive test because it takes time for your body to either build a response to the infection or for the virus to replicate enough for a test to detect it. HIV window periods can vary.

For example, if you have unprotected sex on a Friday night, and get an HIV test Monday morning, the test wonât be able to detect HIV or an immune response to HIV yet. There hasnât been enough time for a positive result, even if the virus is in your body.

To get the earliest, most accurate result, first consider when you were exposed and whether youâre showing symptoms.

  • If you know exactly when you may have come into contact with the virus, take a test 3 months after that date. Tests 3 months after exposure should be 99% accurate.
  • If you are having symptoms of HIV, see your doctor right away. Your doctor may want to use a test that can look for the virus directly in your body.

The Meaning Of A Negative Hiv Test

can you have hiv symptoms and test hiv negative ( hiv negative with symptoms)

One would imagine that an HIV test would be fairly cut and dry, with the results either being HIV negative or HIV positive. HIV negative means you have no signs of HIV in your blood a positive HIV test means that you do have signs of HIV in your blood. You can be positive for HIV even if you don’t have symptoms.

But there is a scenario when a negative HIV test may not be all that it appears. When testing for HIV, there is a short window period when a person can test negative and actually have the virus in his or her system.

And the reasons are simple: when HIV infection occurs, a person’s immune system begins to develop specialized proteins called antibodies, which are specific to the individual pathogen it aims to neutralize . It is those antibodies that most antibody-based HIV tests detect.

It takes some time for enough of those antibodies to be produced for an HIV test to detect them. Therefore, if too little HIV antibody has been produced when a person gets tested, the test result will be returned as negative despite the fact that an actual infection has occurred.

How To Deal With A Potentially False Negative

If you take an STD test and get negative test results, the best thing is to get another test after some time.

Dont get a repeat test immediately in case its still during the window period.

Wait for a few weeks around 3-6 weeks.

Make sure the repeat test is done at a lab. Either go to a lab or clinic yourself or order an online STD lab test from STDCheck.

During the waiting period, do not have sex with anyone just in case it was a false negative, and you really have an STD.

If the second test is positive, remember to inform your sexual partner.

How Soon After Exposure To Hiv Can An Hiv Test Detect If You Are Infected

No HIV test can detect HIV immediately after infection. If you think youve been exposed to HIV, in the last 72 hours, talk to your health care provider about post-exposure prophylaxis , right away.

The time between when a person gets HIV and when a test can accurately detect it is called the window period. The window period varies from person to person and also depends upon the type of HIV test.

Hiv Symptoms But Tested Negative

brandi17

So around 3 months ago I had unprotected sex with someone and shortly after developed symptoms similar to herpes. So I went to my doctor and asked for an std test and also an hiv test as I was also having hiv symptoms at the time. Everything came back negative including the hiv test. However I don’t know what would be causing my symptoms. My symptoms are :

weakness

sore throat that comes and goes

yeast infection and bacterial infection

nausea

weight gain without a change in diet

dizziness

racing heart at times not always

shortness of breath at times

swollen lymph node on one side of the neck

However the person that possibly could have infected me claims he regularly gets blood tests done and has been tested for stds. I’m just worried that I maybe tested too early . I tested around 1 month after possible infection. Is it possible to get a negative test when I’m positive if I test only a month after ? im really scared to go do a second test as I don’t want to go through all the anxiety that it caused me doing the first test .

Hiv Testing In A Health Care Setting Or Lab

The Meaning of a Negative HIV Test

If you take a test in a health care setting or a lab, a health care provider or lab technician will take your sample . If its a rapid test, you may be able to wait for the results, but if its a laboratory test, it can take several days for your results to be available. Your health care provider or counselor may talk with you about your risk factors, answer any questions you might have, and discuss next steps with you, especially if your result is positive.

  • If the test comes back negative, and you havent had an exposure during the window period for the test you took, you can be confident you dont have HIV.
  • If your HIV test result is positive, the lab will conduct follow-up testing, usually on the same sample as the first.

What Happens If My Test Is Positive

If you test positive for HIV, it is important to remember that with treatment you can live a long, healthy life. In fact, with early treatment, people with HIV can live about as long as people that are not infected.

A team approach will help you get the medical care and support that you need. Start by talking to your doctor or the counselor or social worker at the testing site. He or she can help you with suggestions on how to talk to your parents or guardians and how to find a health care provider who’s an HIV specialist. By starting treatment as soon as possible, you can stay healthy and learn to live well with HIV.

What Is The Window Period And How Does It Differ Between Tests

No test can detect HIV immediately after infection. The time between when a person is exposed to HIV and when an HIV test can tell they have HIV is called the window period. The window period can vary between two weeks and three months. The length of the window period varies from person to person and also depends on the type of test used. Some people develop markers of HIV infection that are detected by HIV tests slowly and some people develop them more rapidly. Once these markers of HIV infection are present in amounts that the test can detect, the window period is over.

If someone has had a recent exposure to HIV and gets tested for HIV during the window period, the test result may come back as negative even though the person actually has HIV. This would happen if their body has not started producing the markers of HIV infection at levels that are detectable by the test. When a test result is negative after a recent exposure to HIV, the person should be retested at the end of the window period to confirm they are HIV negative.

The most commonly used HIV tests in Canada detect different markers of HIV infection. Some look for HIV antibodies only, while another looks for both antibodies and the p24 antigen . All antibody tests in Canada can detect both HIV-1 and HIV-2.

The Geenius confirmatory assay can detect HIV infection in 50% of people by 33 days after exposure to HIV and in 99% of people by 58 days after exposure.

I Tested Negative But Could I Still Have An Sti

STD testing is a scary experience for many people. Thats why you might feel relieved when the test comes back negative.

But before you go out and celebrate or have any more sex, consider the possibility of a false negative.

This is when an STD test says you are free from a sexually transmitted infection, but in reality, you are infected.

How Does Hiv Testing Work

can you be hiv positive and test negative (false hiv negative test)

In the early stages of HIV infection, the virus itself is difficult to detect. Rather than looking for the virus, HIV testing usually involves looking at the body’s reaction to the presence of the virus. The measure of the amount of virus in an individual’s blood stream is called the viral load.

Antibodies are produced by the body in reaction to the presence of a virus. An HIV antibody test measures the presence of antibodies in response to the presence of HIV. The most common HIV antibody tests are ELISA and Western Blot. These tests can now be performed on samples of oral fluid.

Which Test Can Give Me Results The Soonest

The period of time also differs, depending on which kind of test you take. The different types of tests include:

  • Antibody tests, which look for the antibodies — special proteins that help fight infection — that your body makes in reaction to an HIV infection. Most rapid tests and at-home tests are these kind. Antibody tests require the longest wait time after infection to get an accurate result. For most people — around 97% — this takes anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks. For some, it can take as long as 6 months.
  • Combination or fourth-generation tests, which look for both antibodies and antigens. Antigens are part of the virus itself. One antigen, p24, is detectable before your body starts making antibodies. These tests are becoming more common in the U.S. They can tell you if you have HIV a little sooner than an antibody test can.
  • Nucleic acid tests , which can detect HIV in your body the soonest after infection. The test looks for the virus in your blood. You need a certain amount of the virus in your blood before the test will detect it. This is called your viral load. You can get a negative test if your viral load is still low. A NAT can tell you if you have HIV as early as 7 to 28 days after infection. It gives the quickest result, but itâs also the most expensive. Doctors donât typically use it unless youâre at a high risk of exposure to HIV.

Youâre more likely to have a NAT if you:

False Negatives And False Positives

Modern STD tests have become much more accurate thanks to better technology and new testing methods.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea tests, the most common STD tests in the United States, are especially accurate.

Labs use a nucleic acid amplification test to look for the bacterias RNA or DNA. This test can accurately detect over 95% of infection cases.

Tests for syphilis, herpes, and HIV are pretty accurate as well.

However, there is still a possibility that the test results could be wrong.

If the test shows you are positive when you dont have that STD, its called a false positive.

If the test shows you are negative when you have that STD, its called a false negative.

In this post, we will focus on false negatives test, why they happen, and how to avoid the potentially dangerous effects of getting a false negative on your STD test.

How Do I Get My Results

Depending on the type of test you take, you will have to wait either a few minutes for your results , or anywhere between a couple of days or weeks . Your healthcare professional should explain how you will get your test results. If you are self-testing, there will be information on how to read your results with your test kit.

If your result is negative, the health centre will contact you to let you know that you tested negative. All positive and will have to be checked again, so you will be asked to come back for further testing. If you get a positive result after using a self-test kit you will need to go to a healthcare clinic.

What Is It Used For

What is the window period for HIV testing?

An HIV test is used to find out if you have been infected with HIV. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS . Most people with HIV don’t have AIDS. People with AIDS have an extremely low number of immune cells and are at risk for life-threatening illnesses, including dangerous infections, a severe type of pneumonia, and certain cancers, including Kaposi sarcoma.

If HIV is found early, you can get medicines to protect your immune system. HIV medicines may prevent you from getting AIDS.
