  • How To Set Up Apple Airpods Pro As Hearing Aids

On my iPhone, I’m using iOS 15.4.1, which includes features designed to assist people with mild to moderate hearing loss. There is a special section on Apple’s website covering all their accessibility features for folks with hearing loss.

In this video, HearingTracker Audiologist Matthew Allsop explains how to set up your Apple Airpods Pro as hearing aids. Closed captions are available on this video. If you are using a mobile phone, please enable captions clicking on the gear icon.

So lets go over each of the essential features of AirPods if you wish to use them for hearing enhancement. To access these features on your iPhone, follow this bread-crumb trail:

Settings app > Accessibility > Audio Visual

When you get to the Audio Visual screen, you’ll discover some of Apples hearing-related features, such as:

Background sounds: Plays background sounds to mask environmental noise and may be helpful for people with tinnitus.

Mono audio: Useful if you have hearing only in one ear.

Sound balance: Helps balance the level of volume between your ears.

However, the best features are located within the Headphone Accommodations section at the top of the menu, and well focus on these later in this article.

You Can Pair Them With Non

Notice that small, flush button on the back of the charging case? Thatâs what youâll use to pair AirPods to an Android device or anything else that doesnât work with Appleâs proprietary chips.

To start pairing to anything new, put the AirPods in their case, then flip the lid up and press and hold the small button on the rear of the charging case until the little LED light starts pulsing white. They should then show up in any Bluetooth-pairing settings on an Android phone, or computer, or TV. Complete instructions can be found here.

Keep in mind that when youâre paired with a non-Apple product, they lose some of their magic. Taking an AirPod out of your ear wonât pause music, and playback controls wonât work either. Android users can install this app for checking AirPods battery level.

To go back to using AirPods with your iPhone, just reselect âAirPodsâ from your iPhoneâs Bluetooth settings and theyâll re-pair.

Can You Use Airpods Pro As A Hearing Aid

Yes, you can set up Airpods pro as hearing aids. Let me explain to you how I did it.

To start, I took a hearing test through the Mimi Hearing Test app on my iPhone, and that showed that my test result was within the normal range. If you have a hearing loss, then your test would indicate the degree of loss for different pitch ranges. Then you can actually plug the hearing test result into your iPhone.

To take the Mimi hearing test, open the app and follow the instructions. Youll have to hold the phone button, listen for the beeps, and then release the button when you stop hearing the sound. You do this for both ears, and thats how you get your hearing test results. My test result came back in the normal range, meaning I have no hearing loss that would come through on a test.

Dr. Thompson explains how to set up AirPods Pro to help hearing loss and tinnitus.

Now you can save the test into the Health function of your iPhone. And if you open that Health function, youll have the option to go down to Hearing, where you can choose Audiogram Data.

If your Mimi Hearing Test results show that you have a degree of hearing loss, then you can plug it into the Health app under the Audiogram tab to access the AirPods hearing aid features.

Open up the Settings app, then press Accessibility. After that, you will open up AirPods, and youll see a screen that gives you the option to press Audio Accessibility.

Experience With Using Air Pods As Hearing Aids

The setup process is not clear to many users. Here I wish that testing the audiogram and using the data would be made easier, especially for older people.

If the settings regarding the amplification of the individual frequencies could be adjusted in more detail on each ear, then AirPods could really compete with conventional hearing aids. But only if the hearing loss is still in the moderate range.

Just like hearing aids, AirPods can be modified if they dont fit properly. The acoustician can take an individual impression of your ear and then a custom earpiece is made to ensure a better fit of the AirPods.

Im convinced that were just a few updates away from Air pods replacing regular hearing aids. This would allow many people to cheaply have access to compensate for their hearing loss.

    When Is Eavesdropping Illegal

The US has strict federal and state laws regarding electronic surveillance. For example, the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act , which amends the Wiretap Act of 1968, makes it illegal to intentionally intercept a wire, oral or electronic communication by using any electronic, mechanical or other devices without the consent of those involved.

Secret recordings of conversations that are reasonably expected to be private are also considered illegal. This depends mainly on context, location, and the general demeanor of the person being recorded.

For instance, if the conversation takes place in a private setting, like a house or car, theres a reasonable expectation of privacy. Suppose the person is being discreet in how theyre relaying information instead of blabbing about it in a public or group setting. In that case, too, theres a reasonable expectation of privacy.

As such, any recordings made in these situations are illegal.

Drawbacks To Relying On Airpods Vs Using Hearing Aids

Hearing aids dont just make sounds louder. Modern digital hearing aids are tiny supercomputers that take in the sounds from the world around you, process the sounds, amplify or quiet the sound, then send it on to you. All of this process is completed quickly, which AirPods cant currently do, as users notice an obvious lag between what is said and what they hear.

Other potential drawbacks to relying on AirPods vs. hearing aids are:

  • Unknown level of hearing loss personalization At this time, it seems that at best, AirPods will help those with very mild cases of hearing loss. But, since the iOS update isnt live yet, we arent sure if even that level of personalization is available.
  • AirPods have a short battery life You dont want to have to charge your hearing aids all the time, so why would you opt for AirPods that have an even shorter battery life. If you are just listening, your AirPods can last for five hours, but if you are actively using them to stream or talk, the AirPods will need to be charged after three hours. With a full battery, most modern hearing aids can last for sixteen or more hours.
  • UNo tinnitus support comes with AirPods Using hearing aids allows you to not only correct hearing loss, but many hearing aids come with built-in tinnitus treatment and management tools. You can play soothing sounds through your AirPods to simulate some tinnitus management, but it isnt the same passive tool that hearing aids can provide.
  • Have Apples Airpods Replaced The Hearing Aid

When you hear someone say hearing aid, what comes to mind? Typically, a bulky unit tucked behind the ear with a small wire snaking into the ear? This image, however, is looking to become outdated very quickly. Technology has improved, and with it the options for style, size, and design have as well.

In fact, word around the block is that even Apple, with its sleek and universally recognizable brand and style has come to change the hearing aid market!

Apples AirPods have taken the world by storm, and now there are even talks that they have transcended simple Bluetooth earbuds to become full fledged hearing aid alternatives.

Lets take a look at what they can, and cant do.

How To Use Airpods As Hearing Aids Using Live Listen

The Live Listen feature in iOS is an option that can be turned on and off right from the Control Center. • Open Settings app, then scroll a little bit down and tap on Control Center.
  • Now, tap on Customize Controls to go to the dedicate menu that allows you to add and remove controls.
  • Scroll down a little and youll notice an option called Hearing with the icon of an ear. Simply tap on the + icon right next to it in order to add Live Listen to the Control Center.
  • Go to the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right edge of the screen if youre using an iPhone X or later. If youre using anything older, just swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access it. Now, youll notice the Live Listen icon at the bottom as shown in the screenshot below. Simply tap on the ear icon.
  • Make sure your AirPods are connected to your device and tap on Live Listen to turn the functionality on.
  • Once Live Listen is on, you may feel like the ambient noise is sort of amplified and it might throw you off at first, especially if youre in a loud environment as it boosts the surrounding volume.
  • You can turn the Live Listen functionality off at any time by simply tapping on Live Listen again through Control Center on the iPhone or iPad.
  • Apple Airpods As Hearing Aids

Now that Apple is installing Live Listen into AirPods, can they be used as a replacement for hearing aids? Apple says no, AirPods cannot take the place of traditional hearing aids. Although Live Listen may help users hear sounds more clearly, people with moderate to severe hearing loss will probably not benefit much from it.

AirPods with Live Listen can assist people with very mild hearing loss. However, AirPods are not as subtle as hearing aidsthey are white and stick out of ones ears. Its now common to see people with bulkier headphones and earbuds commuting or working out. Time will tell if it will become the norm to see groups of people wearing Airpod-like devices conversing over a meal.

So What Is The Difference Between These Devices And Hearing Aids

As the name suggests, personal sound amplifying products indiscriminately makes ALL sounds louder – even in the frequencies you can hear perfectly well.

What it doesnt do is configure sounds and frequencies to match your specific hearing loss.

Treating hearing loss is more than just making sounds louder.

Hearing is a complex set of physiological and neurological processes and involves two important key areas – your ears and your brain.

You dont actually hear a sound until the brains hearing centres receive electrical signals from the ear, process those signals and generate some reaction like getting out of the way of an on-coming car as you cross the street.

As we grow older , the hair cells in your cochlea die off.

The hair cells that detect high frequency are the ones most buffeted in day-to-day life and are the first to die off. This is why high frequency sounds – that help us understand speech are difficult to hear as we get older.

To add complexity to the equation, the longer someone goes with unaddressed hearing loss, the more difficult it is for the brain to remember to correctly interpret sound.

When youre in a noisy environment, struggling to hear a conversation, you are likely to find these hearing devices make it even more difficult to hear.

    Those conditions include:

    • Cognitive decline
    • Increased risk of dementia

So, why would anyone use PSAPs in place of hearing aids?

There are a couple of reasons:

    • And not knowing how hearing or hearing aids work
