The Virginia Department of Health and drugstore giant Walgreens are partnering to offer free, rapid HIV testing in 13 Walgreens pharmacies in Virginia.
The testing will use BioLytical Laboratories Insti HIV-1/HIV-2 Rapid Antibody Test, which can give results in one minute.
Part of our purpose at Walgreens is to help people get, stay and live well, Darron Briscoe, a Walgreens vice president, said Tuesday at the chains store at 4845 S. Laburnum Ave. in eastern Henrico County.
Partnerships like this between the private and public sector are what makes things work, Briscoe said.
That Walgreens and the one at 3901 Oaklawn Blvd. in Hopewell are the chains only two area stores taking part in the public-private initiative that will run through 2016.
Four Walgreens stores in Northern Virginia are offering the testing as are two stores in the Martinsville area and one store each in Danville, South Boston, Fredericksburg, Norfolk and Williamsburg.
About 1,000 new cases of HIV disease are diagnosed in Virginia each year, said Dr. Marissa J. Levine, commissioner of the Virginia Department of Health.
