Whats Next If The Test Is Positive

If a person gets a positive result, a qualified lab should retest the sample to make sure it was not inaccurate or have another sample tested. A positive result on a follow-up test means that a person has HIV.

Its recommended that people who test positive for HIV see a healthcare professional as soon as possible to discuss treatment options.

A medical professional can get a person with HIV started on antiretroviral therapy right away. This is a medication that helps stop HIV from replicating and can help prevent transmission of HIV to other people.

Its important to use condoms, dental dams, or other barrier methods with any and all sexual partners and refrain from sharing needles while waiting for test results or until the virus becomes undetectable in the blood.

Seeing a therapist or joining a support group, whether in person or online, can help cope with the emotions and health issues that come with an HIV diagnosis. Dealing with HIV can be stressful and difficult to discuss with even the closest friends and family.

Speaking privately with a therapist or being part of a community made up of others with the same medical condition can help a person understand how to lead a healthy, active life after diagnosis.

If My Hiv Test Is Negative

Consider your ongoing HIV prevention strategy. This may include PrEP, a once-daily pill that is highly effective in protecting against HIV.

Talk with your healthcare provider about whether you should schedule a follow-up test. The window period when HIV antibodies are detected by a test can take up to 12 weeks after exposure.

If you think you have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours, PEP post exposure prophylaxis may be an option.

How The Oraquick In

What is the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test and how does it work?

The OraQuick In-Home HIV Test is a rapid self-administered over-the-counter test. The OraQuick In-Home HIV Test kit consists of a test stick to collect the specimen, a test tube to insert the test stick and complete the test, testing directions, two information booklets , a disposal bag and phone numbers for consumer support.

This approved test uses oral fluid to check for antibodies to HIV Type 1 and HIV Type 2, the viruses that cause AIDS. The kit is designed to allow you to take the HIV test anonymously and in private with the collection of an oral fluid sample by swabbing your upper and lower gums with the test device. After collecting the sample you insert the device into the kits vial which contains a developer solution, wait 20-40 minutes, and read the test result. A positive result with this test does not mean that an individual is definitely infected with HIV but rather that additional testing should be done in a medical setting to confirm the test result. Additionally, a negative test result does not mean that an individual is definitely not infected with HIV, particularly when exposure may have been within the previous three months. Again an individual should obtain a confirmatory test in a medical setting.

State Health Agency Announces Free Hiv Testing Now Available At Select Walgreens Pharmacies In Milwaukee

Free rapid HIV testing for anyone 18 years of age or older at five Walgreens pharmacies in Milwaukee.

The Department of Health Services today announced a collaborative effort with Walgreens to provide free rapid HIV testing for anyone 18 years of age or older, with or without health insurance, at five Walgreens pharmacies in Milwaukee.

Many people who are living with HIV do not know their HIV status, said Karen McKeown, State Health Officer. Our collaboration with Walgreens will give people in Milwaukee more options to get tested quickly and confidentially. When people know their HIV status, they can take steps to keep themselves and their partners healthy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , one in seven individuals living with HIV are unaware that they have the virus. In Wisconsin, an estimated 1,200 people are living with undiagnosed HIV. The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care.

Tests are administered by Walgreens pharmacists in private consultation rooms and are available during pharmacy hours, with no appointment necessary. Preliminary test results can be provided in as little as one minute. Walgreens pharmacists are specially-trained to provide counseling and support services to those who need assistance and will connect patients to local resources to confirm results and provide additional health care services if necessary.
