  • Why Testing Is Important

    OraQuick HIV Self

If you’re carrying the HIV virus, early treatment can keep you healthy longer. Treating HIV infection early may slow down damage to the immune system and may help prevent or delay some of the life-threatening infections people with AIDS can develop. By knowing your HIV status, you can also take steps to avoid spreading the virus to other people.

The HIV virus is transmitted from person to person through sexual contact and contact with blood from an infected person. It can also be passed to an unborn baby through pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding. You can carry the HIV virus and not have symptoms initially. That’s why testing is so important. Some experts believe everyone should get tested for HIV at least once.

    What Does The Test Measure

At-home STD tests detect the presence of specific STDs. Each STD requires a different laboratory test, so its important for people to make sure that the at-home testing kit theyre using is designed to detect the appropriate STD.

Some STD tests look for the genetic material, or DNA, of the bacteria, virus, or parasite that causes the STD. Other tests detect viral proteins, called antigens, or antibodies that are produced by the body in response to an STD infection. Examples of at-home STD tests, the necessary test samples, and what each test measures are listed in the table below.

    At-home STD Tests
    DNA of Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria
    At-Home Gonorrhea Testing
Fingerstick blood sample or oral fluid sample Antigens and/or antibodies
Antibodies or DNA of the Treponema pallidum bacteria
At-Home Trichomoniasis Testing Urine sample Presence of the parasite itself

Many at-home STD kits allow users to choose between different STD panels, each including a different set of tests. For example, a standard panel of STD tests may include testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis, and trichomoniasis. A complete panel of STD tests may include a standard panel, plus testing for herpes and three types of bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis .

Hiv And Aids Tests At Walgreens

HIV and AIDS tests you perform at home look for antibodies to the HIV virus inside your body. This is the virus that causes AIDS. The HIV virus attacks immune cells that help your body fight off infection. Over time this can weaken your immune system and make it harder to avoid illness. Home HIV and AIDS tests can tell you whether you’ve been exposed to the HIV virus so you can get medical treatment and avoid exposing others.

    • In case of red line appears only next to the C, your test is negative. If there are two lines, one next to the C and one next to the T, you might have been infected. If none of these lines appear, your test isnt working.

Should I Share My Result With Others

Yes. Its very important to share your status with your sexual partners. You may disclose your status to others if you wish, but youre under no obligation.

While insurance companies must have your permission to view your health record, you may be charged higher prices with a chronic condition.

Federal law now prevents insurance companies from denying coverage to people who have HIV or AIDS. And there may be a waiting period before insurance covers a chronic condition.
