Hydrocolloid bandages and patches have become a popular remedy for acne. Proponents claim the dressings can absorb pus inside the pore, speeding up healing and reducing the size of the spot.
Additionally, covering acne with patches or dressings prevents a person from popping or picking it, which may protect the skin from further damage.
An older 2006 clinical trial compared the effects of hydrocolloid dressings with skin tapes for acne treatment. The trial involved 20 participants who applied the dressings or tapes every other day for up to 1 week.
The participants who used the hydrocolloid dressings showed a statistically significant larger reduction in inflammation and acne severity. They also experienced considerably more improvement in oiliness and pigmentation. This is when the skin around the wound becomes darker.
The authors conclude that hydrocolloid dressing may improve mild to moderate inflammatory acne. However, as this was a very small trial, further research is necessary to confirm whether this type of dressing is an effective way to speed healing.
What About A Regular Adhesive Bandagewill That Work Too
You could use a regular bandage as part of your pimple recovery kit, Dr. Jaliman says, but it will only speed up the healing process if it’s applied over some sort of topical treatment, such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide . “The helps the topical penetrate the pimple area more efficiently,” she explains. It also prevents the topical from rubbing off on your pillow during the night, and it stops you from touching the affected area of your face while you’re asleep.
How Do You Use A Hydrocolloid Acne Sticker
To use the bandages, simply clean the area on your skin and apply the bandage, leaving it on for as long as possible. This is usually why they’re most convenient to apply at night, although some are “invisible” and you can try covering them with makeup, or whatever you feel comfortable with.
Campbell suggests wearing the bandage for 24-48 hours if possible, and when they fall off cleanse the area with a gentle soap/cleanser and water. She also says that continuing to change them out more frequently actually can decrease the effectiveness, so leave the bandage on as long as you can for the best results. In addition, she says you can skip the medicated patches since they can cause some irritation.

Do Adhesive Bandages Actually Get Rid Of Acne
Hydrocolloid bandages are effective for pimples, confirms New York Citybased dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD, who has taught dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine for over 25 years. “They treat a breakout by helping to reduce bacteria and infection,” Dr. Jaliman tells Health. “They absorb excess fluid and have a vacuum-like effect to get out any dirt and oil that could be causing a breakout. Then, they convert those impurities into a gel-like substance that sticks to the patch and is sealed away from the face.”

We contacted Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Associate Professor of Dermatology and Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, to demystify the viral trend, and whether or not we should actually be using bandaids on our faces.
“Hydrocolloid dressings have long been used in wound care because of their ultra-absorbing properties. They form a protective seal over the skin to protect it from the environment and absorb excess fluid that drains from the wound. This is the premise behind the use of pimple patches made from the same material,” Dr. Zeichner said. “While they were originally designed to treat open wounds, they are also useful in treating acne. The other advantage of hydrocolloids is that they form a physical barrier over the pimple to prevent you from picking it.”

Wearing a hydrocolloid patch under your mask can reduce the risk of irritation or breakouts and you could wear a sticker on the lower half of your face all day without anyone noticing.

You might have heard of hydrocolloid bandages from more medical settings . Although not exactly the same, acne hydrocolloid bandages are similar in that they’re made with the same type of material that helps skin heal quickly. Although all products vary, most of them are small pieces of hydrocolloid bandages that can easily fit over a blemish. Some are clear, some are not , and some even have microneedles that infuse the blemish with acne medication. Either way, they all work basically the same way. Dermatologist Dr. Caren Campbell explains more below.
This Tiktok Acne Remedy Really Does Work
A trick for clearing up acne is making the rounds on TikTok, and the solution actually isnt that crazy. TikTok users are putting hydrocolloid bandagesthose ones often marketed for use on blisterson pimples, and there are a couple of reasons they can be effective at clearing up acne spots.
How it works
The hydrocolloid bandages contain a gelatin and polymers that form a gel over a wound to promote faster wound healing and to decrease pain. Theyre great for wounds and for blisters.
For acne lesions, the bandages can be applied directly on pimples and help decrease inflammation, redness and irritation, and they can absorb drainage from active acne blemishes. As an adhesive placed directly on a breakout, hydrocolloid bandages can effectively keep someone from picking and scratching at areas on their face as well.
Is there a downside?
Theres no real harm in using hydrocolloid bandages on pimples. These are waterproof bandages and can be washed over without being removed, so they can be left in place for up to 3-5 days, allowing for healing of acne lesions under the bandages.
Theyre a great deterrent for anyone with a habit of picking at their acne, because picking at acne blemishes can lead to increased inflammation and scabbing, secondary bacterial infection, and possible scarring.
Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid acne patches can work, too, but the downside to those products is that they can cause irritation and dryness to the treated areas.

What Do Hydrocolloid Bandages Do
“Hydrocolloid dressings are a great option for inflamed acne lesions,” says Campbell. In other words, if your pimple is red or inflamed on the surface, that is the best type of acne to treat with a bandage. She also says you can use the bandages on raised acne lesions or whiteheads and cystic acne.
According to Campbell, the bandage creates a protective barrier that is more conducive to healing. They also prevent you from picking at the breakout, which definitely does not make the situation better. “Hydrocolloid dressing keeps your body’s own healing messengers within the wound to expedite healing,” she explains.
Should People Be Using Hydrocolloid Band
While hydrocolloid patches can treat acne, it is not what they were originally formulated to do. Instead, Dr. Graf recommends using acne-fighting products with active ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid that are intended to treat acne. “The bandages are helpful for inflamed pimples that may contain pus, but won’t really help other conditions like clogged pores,” she explains.

How To Use Hydrocolloid Patches
How people use hydrocolloid dressings, bandages, and patches depends on the situation and the type of product they are using.
For wounds, it is best to follow the instructions on the packet. Alternatively, a person can ask a healthcare professional for guidance.
For acne treatment, hydrocolloid patches can be the most convenient option, as they are small and may help make the acne less visible. These patches may work best on acne lesions that are near the surface of the skin, particularly if the lesion has a head, which is an opening that allows it to drain.
To use:
When a person removes the patch, the spot may look flatter, less inflamed, and less swollen. If necessary, they can apply another patch to absorb more pus, or leave it to heal on its own.

However, skin irritation may be a possibility, as it is with all topical products. If any irritation occurs, individuals should remove the patch immediately and wash the skin to remove any leftover adhesive.
Hydrocolloid Patches Work Best For Shrinking Red Angry Pimples
Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, told Insider that hydrocolloid bandages may not be suited for all kinds of acne. While they won’t do much to blackheads or whiteheads, he said they’re perfect for drawing out fluid from “red, angry pimples,” or cystic acne.
He added that the absorbent patches can also help heal pimples you’ve previously picked, as they were originally designed for wound care.
For blackheads and whiteheads, Garshick recommended seeking out pimple stickers smaller hydrocolloid patches specifically designed for acne that contain an active ingredient such as salicylic acid, which helps unclog pores.
Not all pimple stickers contain salicylic acid, she said. Some formulations are basically identical to hydrocolloid bandages, while others contain micro-darts for additional penetration.

How Do Hydrocolloid Dressings Work
The term hydrocolloid refers to a group of substances that are soluble in water and can thicken liquids. In hydrocolloid dressings, companies may use gelatin or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the hydrocolloid agent.
When a wound secretes fluid, the hydrocolloid mixes with it to form a gel. According to older research from , this helps with wound healing by creating a moist environment that protects any new tissue the body is growing.

There is not much research on how hydrocolloid dressings compare with other types of dressings. However, the research that does exist suggests they may have unique benefits in certain situations.
